A Day in the Garden with Area 1 PDF Print E-mail

It was a very, very busy day for Area1. We started in the garden where we looked at the punnets of seedlings we were going to plant in our “Mr. Mc.Gregor’s garden”. We looked at baby carrots and how small they were and we were worried that the hot sun would shrivel them up. We had some bean seedlings too, not the French beans that Peter Rabbit ate, ours are runner beans. Red veges were in, with lettuce  with lovely red edges on the leaves and we also had some red onions, which the children know are good for using in salads. Click Here to view our pictures

It was very hot in the garden while we were moving mulch, working out how far apart our seedlings needed to be planted, digging holes and gently removing seedlings from the punnets. The most popular job though was watering the plants using watering cans, and a few children were being watered too!

Cooking class was fantastic today. We had more wonderful helpers, even Holly’s big sister came in. We merrily cooked up over a kilo of runner beans, 5 kilos of peaches, nectarines and plums, and made a mountain of cucumber salad. So much food was prepared and Mrs. Nairn was worried we’d made too much and she was looking forward to taking the leftovers home…..but she had nothing to take home….everything, even the last cheesy bean was eaten!

Mrs. Nairn laughed as 4 students went back to class carrying bowls of cold green beans to eat as a snack. It must have been the parmesan cheese and garlic that made them so delicious.
Well done Area 1 and Thankyou to the mothers of Alex, Holly, Joshua from A2 and big sister Samantha who made the cooking lesson work so well.
