MADDINGTON KENWICK SCHOOL KITCHEN GARDEN PROJECT

East Maddington Primary School has been involved in the Maddington Kenwick School Kitchen Garden Project which aims to increase the Fruit and vegetable consumption among primary school children in the Maddington Kenwick Area.  The project is a joint initiative of the local schools in the Yule Brook Cluster and the South Metropolitan Public Health Unit.  The project has also been made possible by support from The Maddington Kenwick Sustainable Communities Partnership, The City of Gosnells, Foodbank WA., The Public Education Endowment Trust and Child and Adolescent Health Services.
Today the Hon. Nicola Roxon MP, Federal Minister for Health and Ageing, launched a new federal initiative at East Maddington Primary School. Minister Roxon invited guests to join her and Stephanie Alexander in calling for Australian Government primary schools to express their interest in participating in the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden National Pilot Project.  The project will be implemented in up to 190 Government primary schools nationally over four years. Primary school students will learn how to grow, cook and share fresh food as part of the Government’s plans to promote healthy eating and tackle obesity.

  • Cooking workshops for parents and carers
  • Canteen providing platters of fruit and vegetables from Foodbank to classes at lunchtime and menu including healthy “happy meals” ie. lunchbox with drink, sandwich, fruit, popcorn and toy or trinket
  • Appointment of a Coordinator, Mrs Julie Moore and Community Liaison Officer, Mrs Diane Karniewicz to support the project
  • Promotion through ‘Crunch and Sip’ activities
  • Workshop for staff
  • Ongoing working party meetings
  • Establishment of our garden this term with whole school community support
  • Market garden stall at our assemblies
  • Team planning to engage the whole school in the garden project

  • Baseline data being collected through surveys of the school community including students
  • Promotions through our newsletter including healthy recipes
  • Garden diaries where classes record their involvement
This exciting project is continuing with us now planning a Visioning Workshop to plan for 2009 and beyond and may include a bush tucker garden and an orchard.  In addition, we are upgrading our kitchen facilities in each of the teaching clusters to support cross curricula learning.  A key consideration in our expansion of our garden is that this supports the City of Gosnells’ streetscape improvement program and this may present other learning opportunities for our students such as garden sculptures.  We also have a curriculum planning day organised for the end of this term where teachers will work with Clayton Chipper from the Health Department in developing a whole school plan with curriculum links for 2009.  Hub schools have been invited to participate and customise the plan for their school.
